Windom Park Apartment
Residential Design, Spatial Planning, Sourcing
Minneapolis, MN
2019
This residential project focused on reworking a compact apartment to better support daily living, shared routines, and hosting. The scope included spatial planning, sourcing, light-touch construction, and hands-on execution, with an emphasis on flexibility, durability, and atmosphere. Nearly all furnishings were sourced secondhand, and custom interventions were introduced where needed to improve flow, usability, and comfort.
Project Details
-
Improved usability within a compact footprint, where rooms needed to support multiple modes of living including eating, working, lounging, and hosting
Rebalanced storage and circulation, removing underperforming elements to create more generous shared space
Integrated a new partner’s belongings and artwork, layering multiple identities into a cohesive home
Optimized the apartment for real life, accounting for pets, frequent guests, and daily routines rather than idealized layouts
-
Create a calm, light-filled interior grounded in warmth, restraint, and lived-in ease
Favor flexibility over fixed function, allowing spaces to shift between work, dining, and relaxation
Prioritize how the space feels to inhabit, especially when shared, rather than purely visual impact
Build character through texture and layering, using art, material variation, and secondhand pieces instead of excess decoration
-
Established a warm minimalist language with Scandinavian influence, emphasizing light, neutral tones and calm continuity
Removed an obstructive living room closet and replaced it with a custom dining nook featuring bench seating and a built tabletop
Introduced a dual-purpose projector zone above the dining area to support both everyday use and entertaining
Opened the kitchen visually by removing upper cabinets, replacing them with open shelving and white subway tile
Optimized existing storage through vertical shelving, fitted hampers, and strategic organization
Designed a concealed litter solution by modifying an IKEA Pax wardrobe with lining and ventilation
Reclaimed an unusable baby closet by fitting it with a vintage dresser, removing trim to allow a flush installation
Sourced nearly all furniture secondhand, prioritizing durability, scale, and versatility
Completed all painting and much of the build work by hand, reinforcing a practical, hands-on approach
